Derrick White put up an impressive 28 points, including sinking five 3-pointers, guiding the Boston Celtics to a come-from-behind victory over the Miami Heat with a final score of 119-111 in a rematch of last season’s Eastern Conference finals. The game underscored the sustained intensity of the rivalry between these two teams, despite notable changes in their lineups following their seven-game playoff showdown.

Jaylen Brown chipped in with 27 points and six rebounds, while Jayson Tatum contributed 22 points. This contest marked another chapter in the ongoing rivalry between these two Eastern Conference powerhouses, who have clashed in the conference finals in three of the past four seasons.

Derrick White emerged as the star of the fourth quarter, delivering 14 crucial points to secure the victory for the Celtics. White discussed his role, stating, “I’ve been part of this team for a couple of years, and I have a good sense of where my teammates need to be on the court. My aim is to facilitate and lead effectively.” Jayson Tatum praised White’s performance, highlighting his aggressive and versatile play.

The Celtics, who have undergone significant roster changes, improved their season record to 2-0, showcasing newfound poise in late-game situations, an area where they sometimes struggled last season.

In the previous season, the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat split their four encounters, with the Heat eventually advancing to the NBA Finals following a grueling seven-game series. The first meeting of this season’s three-game series bore the marks of their playoff battles. Both teams were closely matched, with neither side enjoying a lead of more than five points at the end of any of the first three quarters. The game featured six ties and six lead changes.

Tyler Herro, who missed the conference finals due to a hand injury, delivered an impressive performance, contributing 28 points, including five of Miami’s 16 three-pointers. Bam Adebayo added 27 points and secured seven rebounds, while Jimmy Butler faced challenges, scoring 14 points on 3-of-11 shooting.

Erik Spoelstra, the head coach of the Heat, acknowledged the evolving dynamics of both teams while expressing respect for the enduring rivalry, stating, “We’ve been locked in battles with the Celtics for four years now, dating back to the Florida bubble. It’s been a privilege to face them so many times.”

The Celtics assumed the lead in the fourth quarter, and Derrick White played a pivotal role in their success, including a crucial block on Jimmy Butler’s attempted dunk. Despite a late rally by the Heat, which included a 3-pointer by Kevin Love, the Celtics managed to preserve their lead and secure the victory.

The game had a solemn aspect, as the Celtics paid tribute to the victims of a recent mass shooting in Lewiston. The players donned the warmups of their G League affiliate, the Maine Celtics, and wore a “Maine” band on their jerseys in honor of the state impacted by the tragic incident.
