In the match report, Manchester United fell short in their quest for Women’s Champions League group stage qualification, succumbing to a defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in the second round of qualifying. United was bested 3-1 in the second leg in France, culminating in a 4-2 aggregate loss to the two-time Champions League finalists.

Lieke Martens initiated the scoring for PSG in the 17th minute, but United’s midfielder, Lisa Naalsund, managed to level the tie in the 47th minute at the Parc des Princes. Regrettably, the home side swiftly regained their lead as Martens secured her second goal just a minute later. Sandy Baltimore extended PSG’s advantage, effectively dashing United’s hopes of advancing to the group stages.

This setback for Marc Skinner’s team signifies that the lone British representative in this season’s Champions League group stages is the Women’s Super League champions, Chelsea. Arsenal also made an early exit in the first round of qualifying following a penalty shootout loss to Paris FC. Similarly, Scottish Women’s Premier League champions, Glasgow City, were eliminated in the same round as United, suffering a second-round qualifying defeat to Norwegian champions Brann with a comprehensive 6-0 aggregate score.

The hosts began the game on a strong note and came close to seizing the lead when Tabitha Chawinga, the scorer in the first leg, outmaneuvered Mary Earps but failed to trouble the goalkeeper. The opening goal materialized eight minutes later, with Martens capitalizing on a rebound and finding the back of the net after Earps’ initial save attempt on Chawinga’s shot.

United attempted a swift response, with Geyse teeing up Naalsund in the box, but the Norwegian was unable to convert the opportunity. Skinner’s team had another chance before halftime as Geyse and Ella Toone combined, but Toone’s effort failed to find its mark.

However, United did manage to reenter the game shortly after the restart, with Geyse creating space for Naalsund, who scored from close range. Nevertheless, PSG quickly regained the lead, with Martens securing her second goal from close range.

United persevered in their quest for an equalizer, but Katarzyna Kiedrzynek thwarted attempts from Hannah Blundell and Geyse. PSG then solidified their grip on the tie just before the hour mark, as Sandy Baltimore outpaced Blundell and executed a chip past Earps from a challenging angle.

United kept fighting, with Katie Zelem compelling another save from Kiedrzynek through a free-kick. Leah Galton’s goal was disallowed due to a minor foul on Kiedrzynek, who required attention after a collision with a United player. Ella Toone’s spectacular attempt hit the post during stoppage time, but it wasn’t to be United’s night.
