In his fifth novel, Lynch delves into the complexities of Western democracies and their reactions, or lack thereof, to global crises, drawing parallels to the apathy witnessed during significant events like the Syrian collapse.

Esi Edugyan, chair of the 2023 Booker Prize judging panel, noted, “Through ‘Prophet Song,’ we are compelled to confront our own complacency, following the gripping journey of a woman striving to shield her family in Ireland sliding towards totalitarianism. It’s a narrative that’s both stirring and thought-provoking.”

Lynch, a former chief film critic for Ireland’s Sunday Tribune, expressed his aim to plunge readers into the realm of totalitarianism, employing vivid realism in his writing to intensify the dystopian backdrop.

“My goal was to completely immerse readers to the point where, by the book’s end, they wouldn’t just understand but truly feel the weight of this issue,” Lynch shared in his comments featured on the Booker Prize website.

With this recognition, Lynch becomes the latest addition to a list of five Irish authors who have claimed the prestigious Booker Prize, joining the esteemed company of Iris Murdoch, John Banville, Roddy Doyle, and Anne Enright. Notably, Northern Irish writer Anna Burns secured the prize in 2018.
