Around 330 players participated in this initiative, showcasing their connections to various countries. Peter O’Reilly, NFL’s executive vice president of club business, international, and events, emphasized the celebration of diverse heritages and the league’s expanding global presence.
Among the displayed helmet decals were those of two quarterbacks proudly exhibiting the South Korean flag. Sam Howell, the quarterback for the Washington Commanders, has a Korean heritage through one of his grandmothers. His connection to Korea traces back to his grandparent’s meeting after the Korean War, with Howell expressing pride in his heritage.
His grandmother, Han, played a significant role in his life, regularly attending his high school games and continuing her support throughout his college career. Her passing in November 2022 further fueled Howell’s interest in exploring his Korean roots.
Expressing his curiosity and pride in his background, Howell has actively embraced his Korean heritage. This was evident when he secured an endorsement deal with Seoul Juice, a Korean juice brand, during his training camp in 2023.
Wearing the South Korean flag on his Commander’s helmet, Howell joins a group of 14 Commanders players participating in the NFL’s heritage initiative, representing diverse countries worldwide.
While Howell and Arizona’s Kyler Murray stand as active starting quarterbacks with Korean heritage, other players, such as Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton and Falcons kicker Younghoe Koo, have also showcased the Korean flag decal. Hamilton’s heritage is a part of his background, while Koo, born in South Korea, moved to the U.S. during childhood.
