Warren Buffett Donates $5.3 Billion to Charity

- Legendary investor Warren Buffett made his largest charitable donation yet on Friday, giving away $5.3 billion worth of Berkshire Hathaway shares to five foundations.
- The 94-year-old (as of August 2024) investor converted a portion of his Class A shares to donate over 13 million Class B shares to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation (named after his late wife), and the charities led by his children, Howard, Susan, and Peter Buffett.
- This continues Buffett’s commitment to philanthropy, having donated annually to these same charities since 2006.
- Buffett, also known as the “Oracle of Omaha,” has pledged to donate most of his fortune built at Berkshire Hathaway, the Omaha-based conglomerate he has led since 1965.
- Following these donations, Buffett retains significant holdings in Berkshire Hathaway, with an estimated net worth of $130 billion.
New Charitable Trust and Successor at Berkshire Hathaway
- In a Wall Street Journal interview, Buffett revealed plans for his remaining wealth after his passing. A new charitable trust overseen by his three children will manage the majority of his estate.
- “The purpose is to help those less fortunate,” Buffett told the Journal.
- Buffett has previously designated his children as executors of his will and trustees of the charitable trust. Notably, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will no longer receive donations after his death, as Buffett stepped down as a trustee in 2021.
Berkshire Hathaway’s Future
- Berkshire Hathaway’s annual meeting in May foreshadowed a future without Buffett at the helm. He openly discussed his age and his late business partner, Charlie Munger.
- Greg Abel, currently the vice chairman for non-insurance operations, has been named Buffett’s successor and assumed most leadership responsibilities.
- As previously stated, Buffett intends to make his will publicly available after his death.
