Pixel 8

The Pixel 8, with a starting price of £699 (€799/$699), comes equipped with a 6.2-inch 120Hz OLED screen, making it slightly more compact and lighter than its predecessor. It features an enhanced dual-camera system that captures 21% more light, resulting in improved low-light performance. Additionally, it includes a macrophotography mode. An interesting addition is the “best take” feature, allowing users to interchange faces between multiple frames to create more appealing photos. Furthermore, the photo editor feature enables subject resizing and the application of various effects using generative AI. Moreover, a new “audio magic eraser” has been added to eliminate background noise in videos.

The Pixel 8 Pro, priced at £999 (€1,099/$999), offers the same software features and boasts a larger 6.7-inch screen. It also features a third 5x optical zoom telephoto camera. A noteworthy addition to the Pixel 8 Pro is the inclusion of a temperature sensor, enabling users to measure the temperature of various objects, including walls and electronic devices, with potential future health-related applications. The phone also includes manual camera controls and a “video boost” feature that utilizes AI for Night Sight video and other enhancements.

Both phones are powered by Google’s Tensor G3 chip and come with AI capabilities, including article summarization, text-to-speech functionality, language translation, and improved grammar and proofreading features.

A significant advancement is the extension of software support to seven years from the release date, surpassing the previous model’s support duration and outlasting many competitors, including Samsung. This aligns Google with Apple, which also offers seven years of updates, while Fairphone recently set a new standard by providing up to 10 years of support for its latest phone.

In addition to the smartphone announcements, Google unveiled an updated Pixel Watch 2. This new iteration features a refined design, 10% lighter than before while remaining compatible with previous-generation straps. The watch is equipped with a faster quad-core chip and runs on the latest WearOS 4, including new Gmail and Calendar apps. It also includes enhancements like electrical stress sensors, an improved heart rate sensor, and automatic workout recognition in the Fitbit app. The Pixel Watch 2 will be available starting October 12, with prices starting at £349.

The upcoming Android 14 will begin its rollout to Google’s Pixel smartphones and tablets, with support for third-party devices expected shortly. Android 14 introduces enhanced customization options for the lock screen, generative AI wallpaper, and dynamic feature prominence, such as displaying the weather widget during rainy conditions. Additionally, the Health Connect system securely syncs fitness and health data from third-party apps on the device, similar to Apple’s Health app, ensuring data privacy.

In short
